Sail Wind Load is the force the apparent wind is placing on a sail.

Load in Pounds = Sail Area * (Wind Speed )2 * 0.00431

This equation is helpful in determining the size of the winch which is needed for the management of a 100% jib in a heavy wind.  Divide the pounds of pressure on the jib by the gear ratio of the winch and by the ratio of the winch handle's length to the radius of winch's drum.  This will give the force needed to operate the winch in a heavy wind.
